Isaac Whaley House
1605 County Rd 42, Elgin
This one-and-a-half storey house features twin dormers, an offset front door, white wooden detailing on the stunning front porch, original red shutters, and 12-over-12 windows downstairs with 6-over-6 on the second floor. Second and third entrances are located in the backyard and on the right façade at the back single-storey section. The home of a storekeeper, this house displays the way in which a structure can be both restored and maintained over time.
Originally thought to be built in 1843 when Isaac Whaley purchased the lot from Joshua Bates, an 1817 newspaper clipping was found inside one of the walls during renovations. Interestingly, the name George Brown is carved into one of the windows (owner in 1869). Similar to the other homes on the main street of Philipsville, this house is located right at the edge of the street. It is surrounded by a large, well-manicured, lawn.
